The Burnet High School boys basketball team stomped Stephenville 77-49 Jan. 6.
In doing so, the Bulldogs improved in some key areas head coach Roy Kiser wanted to see before they began District 24-4A play against Georgetown Gateway Friday, Jan. 13, at 6:30 p.m. in The Doghouse. The subvarsities play first at 5 p.m.
“I was pleased with our defensive effort,” Kiser said of the Stephenville game. “We guarded the opponent correctly in most cases and blocked out with much more intensity. We felt like we needed to focus on their point guard and their post player (junior Creece Brister at 6 feet 6 inches), who had good size. I would give credit to all of our guards who ended up guarding their point guard at some point during the game and our two posts, (senior) Brayden Ellett-Clark and (freshman) Layne Holder who held their post to five points.”
Meanwhile, Burnet didn’t experience a letdown offensively led by junior guard Baylor Dawes, who hit four 3-pointers and grabbed seven rebounds.
“Baylor Dawes really got us going offensively,” Kiser said. “Our offense came as a combination of 3-pointers — 10 of them — and attacking the basket.”
Though the Bulldogs will enjoy an open date Tuesday, Jan. 10, Kiser noted they aren’t taking a holiday, adding it feels good to earn some victories before the start of the crucial part of their season.
“We will keep working on defense and all of our offensive sets to prepare for what we think Gateway will play against us,” he said. “Our kids believe in our team because we have really tested them with a tough schedule. It was nice to get two wins right before the open date going into district.”
